Painful Menses: Leading Indications In Dysmenorrhea

Pain, cramps or spasmodic pains during menses is a very common condition faced by more then 25% women, mostly in their adolescents. Many symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and changes in mood and behaviour can associate pain during menses.
This condition medically termed as Dysmenorrhea.

Dysmenorrhea is classified as primary and secondary which depends on presence or absence of underlying pathology. Dysmenorrhea can feature different kinds of pain, including sharp, throbbing, dull, nauseating, burning, or shooting pain. Dysmenorrhea may precede menstruation by several days or may accompany it, and it usually subsides as menstruation tapers off. Dysmenorrhea may coexist with excessively heavy blood loss, known as menorrhagia.

Homeopathy is a wonderful choice to get rid off this painful menses. Painkillers ( mostly NSAID’s) are just a temporary help to reduce or subside this pain every month. Homeopathy in more then 80% of cases permanently cure this disorder.

Here is lot much homeopathic medicine to help the patient facing pains during menses. Following is an article describing a few with their important indication.

Following article published in The Critque, Formerly THE DENVER JOURNAL OF HOMEOPATHY, VOL. V. DENVER, COLO., JANUARY 15,1898. No. 1

Pelvic Inflammatory disease is very common among young and sexually active women. It defines inflammation of ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and clinically presents as Pain in lower part of abdomen, Tenderness(Pain on touch), Back pain, Foul smelling copious vaginal discharge, Bleeding per vagina- on and off, Painful coition, Pain after sex and  Pain during urination.

Pelvic Inflammatory disease is curable by homeopathic medicines. In acute cases it takes few weeks and in chronic cases of PID it needs few months of continuous medication to cure PID. More than 200 Homeopathic medicines are indicated for PID. Most common and frequently used medicines are described here.

1. Aconite :-  Violent fever with inflammation of ovaries or uterus, caused by checked perspiration or from sudden checking of menstrual flow, from fright, during confinement or during menstruation, from riding in cold winds or from getting wet when overheated . Accompanied by bitter vomiting and cold sweat, painful urging to urinate; hard rapid pulse; hot dry skin; intense thirst; sharp shooting pain in abdomen with tenderness, great restlessness; fear of death and predicting even the hour of death.

2. Apis :-  Increased sexual desire with stinging pain in ovaries after sexual intercourse; burning, stinging as after a sting of a bee; sharp, stinging, periodic pains in ovaries. Right ovarian manifestations are more specific to this medicine. Pain from right ovary extending down to thigh. Bearing down in uterine region, thirstlessness and intolerance of heat. Apis holds the same relation to the right ovary that LACHESIS does to left ovary. Apis is indicated in ovaritis with extreme soreness in right ovarian region, together with burning or stinging sensations. Aggravation(<) on right side, < while stretching, < raising arms, < from touch and Heat but Amelioration(>) by lying on it, > lying on right side.

3. Arsenicum Album :- Inflammation of ovaries and uterus when there is burning, lancinating pains as if hot coals were burning the part, accompanied by throbbing. Amelioration(>) by hot applications and aggravation(<) by cold.Restlessness is important indication for arsenic with these complaints.

4. Belladona :- Abdomen swollen, very sensitive to touch, pain in ovaries on appearance of menses, throbbing pains, pains come suddenly and disappear suddenly, < least movement, < pressure; Great bearing down as if everything would come out of vagina.

5. Lachesis :- Inflammation of ovaries and uterus, can not bear any pressure, not even of the clothes, Lachesis specially favour left ovary, sensation as if pains were ascending towards the chest; < after sleep, Pains >(ameliorate) by a flow of blood from the vagina. Menses scanty, feeble, blood lumpy, black and very offensive; pains in the hips, bearing down in the region of the left ovary- all better when the flow is established.

6. Palladium :- Induration and swelling of right ovary, soreness and shooting pains from navel to pelvis. < from exertion and standing. > lying on left side, < mental agitation, < from being in society, < music, after stool. Palladium develops an egotism which manifests itself in the patient’s concern for the good opinion of others, consequently her pride is often injured.

7. Platina :-  Platina patient is rather haughty and proud; egotistical. She seems to look down upon everybody and everything as beneath her. Pain in ovaries are cramping and cause numbness  and tingling there. Pains increase gradually and decrease just as gradually as they came, unlike Belladona. Menses are too early, too profuse and consist of dark, stringy, clotted blood.  Sexual passion altogether too strong; paroxysmal burning pains in ovary.

8. Conium :- Burning, sore, aching sensation in uterine region with induration and enlargement of uterus or ovaries, pains extending through whole lower part of abdomen, hip and back. Homeopathic Medicines For Urinary Tract Infection

 © Dr.R.S.Mann 2010

Homeopathic medicines are very effective, safe and curative in cases of Urinary Tract Infections. Medicines in homeopathy are prescribed very carefully on basis of symptoms, signs and modalities of every individual case.

Following medicines are few most common homeopathic medicines used to treat UTI.

Do not consume any medicine without consulting a Homeopath.

Mental concomitant symptoms before, during and after urination are given in another post.

Few other medicines which are listed by F. E. McCurtain, published in 1898 in The Critique "Notes on Cystitis".

Cantharides:- Constant urging to urinate, passing but a few drops at a time, urine mixed with blood. Drinking even a small quantities of water increases pain in bladder. Intolerable urging, before, during and after urination; violent pains in bladder.
Burning, cutting pains in urethra during micturition; violent tenesmus and strangury.
Burning and urging to urinate continuous after urination. The urine does not pass freely or copiously but dribbles away in hot, scalding, sometimes bloody with burning, cutting pains.
Cantharides is indicated in acute cystitis more frequently than any other homeopathic medicine.

Cannabis Sativa:- Urethra very sensitive to touch or pressure; cannot walk with legs close together, it hurts the urethra.
Pain extending from orifice of urethra backward, burning – biting, posteriorly more sticking while urinating.Tearing pain along urethra in a zigzag direction.
Cannabis sativa is very similar to cantharides in its urethral phenomena. It has same yellow, purulent discharge from the urethra but is more important when the discharge is thin and there is smarting and burning on urination. There seems to be more burning and smarting under cannabis sativa, while there is more tenesmus and cutting under cantharides. The glans penis is dark red and swollen. Chordee may be present. Cannabis sativa has drawing pain in the region of kidneys extending into the inguinal glands with anxious nauseous sensation in the epigastrium.

Equisetum Hyemale:- Severe dull pain in the bladder, as from distension , not ameliorate after urination.
Frequent and intolerable urging to urinate, with severe pain at close of urination.
Constant desire to urinate; large quantity of clear, watery urine but without amelioration.
Sharp, Cutting, Burning pain in urethra while urinating.
Equisetum acts very similarly to Cantharides on the kidneys and bladder. In Equisetum less escape of blood and less tenesmus of bladder than may be found under Cantharides. Urine is less scalding in Equisetum but there is an excess of mucus. The bladder is tender and sore with severe dull pain which is worse after urination.

Petroselinum:- Frequent, sudden and irresistible urging to urinate. Cannabis sativa, Cantharides and Mercurius all have the sudden urging to urinate but it is strongest under Petroselinum.
In the case of a child, he will be suddenly seized with the desire to urinate; if he cannot be gratified at once, he will jump up and down with pain.
Burning , tingling from perineum throughout whole urethra.
Intense biting, itching deep in urethra, must rub it with some rough article in urethra to ameliorate. Pain at root of penis or neck of bladder.

Capsicum:- Constriction, Burning and Smarting Sensation. Burning in bladder. Burning, Smarting after urination.
Strangury: tenesmus neck of bladder, urging to frequent and almost ineffectual urination.
Needle- stitches in forepart of urethra, when not urinating. Burning at the orifice of urethra before, during and after urination.

Mercurius Sol. and Mercurius Corrosivus:- Tenesmus of baldder with intense burning in urethra. Urine hot, burning, scanty or suppressed, in drops with great pain; bloody, brown, brick-dust sediment; albuminous.
Great tenesmus of bladder and rectum at the same time. When the discharge becomes worse at night, green and purulent. More violent tenesmus, burning and swelling hence it is similar to Cantharides. Urethral meatus is very red.
Constant desire to urinate; indeed every ten minutes; but only a little passed.
Urine immediately after being passed very turbid and depositing a sediment; He passes much more urine then the liquid he has drunk.
Too frequent and too profuse urination.

Apis Mellifica:- Incontinence of urine, with great irritation of the parts; can scarcely retain the urine a moment and when passed scalds severely; frequent, painful, scanty, bloody urine.
Urine scanty, dark sediment like coffee grounds. Scanty urination with absence of thirst.

Terebinthina:- The urine has the odor of violets.
Haematuria- blood thoroughly mixed with the urine; sediment like coffee grounds; cloudy, smoky, albuminous; profuse, dark or black, painless.
Violent burning and drawing pains in kidney, bladder and urethra.
Violent burning and cutting in bladder; tenesmus; sensitive hypogastrium; cystitis and retention from atony of fundus.
Strangury; spasmodic retention of urine. Urine rich in albumin and blood.

Sarsaparilla:- Severe almost unbearable pain at conclusion of urination.
Urine, bright and clear but irritating; scanty, slimy, flaky, sandy, copious, passed without sensation; deposits white sand.

Sand in urine or on diaper; child screams before and while passing it.
Excruciating pains from right kidney downwards.

Staphisagria:- Urging to urinate, has to sit at urinal for hours; in young married women; after coition; after difficult labor; burning in urethra when not urinating; urging and pain after urinating in prostatic troubles of old men.
Burning or smarting in urethra when not micturating ; ceases while urine is passing. This is the most indicating medicine for Honeymoon Cystitis.

Ocimum Can :- May be employed in renal colic when there is considerable hemorrhage; when the urine not only has a brick red sediment as under Pareira brava, but contains considerable blood. It favors the right side.

Aconitum:- Frequently suits the incipiency of renal and cystic affections, which, unmodified, progress into Cantharides condition. The urging to urinate, the dysuria and hematuria are accompanied by an anxious restlessness and high fever altogether different from expression of Cantharides.

Chimaphila Umbellate:- Acute and chronic catarrh of urinary tract. Scanty urine and loaded with ropy, muco-purulent sediment. UTI  cases with prostatic enlargement.
Urging to urinate. Urine turbid, offensive, containing ropy or bloody mucus and depositing a copious sediment. Burning and scalding during micturition and straining afterward. Must strain before flow comes. Scanty urine. Acute prostatitis ,retention and feeling of a ball in perineum. Fluttering in region of kidney. Sugar in urine. Unable to urinate without standing with feet wide apart and body inclined forward.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease( PID)

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
© Dr Vandana Patni 2008

Pelvic Inflammatory disease is a disease of young women who are sexually active and in child born age. Pelvic inflammatory disease is Inflammation of woman's upper genital tract or reproductive organs (cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and surrounding tissues), main victims are fallopian tubes and ovaries. Bacterial infection is most common cause of PID.

Read Homeopathic medicines for PID here.

How Nature Protect Reproductive Organs:

There are many natural barriers which prevent entry of bacteria from cervix to upward.

1.In Virgin girls intact Hymen prevents ascending infections.
2.Acidity of Vagina inhibits the bacterial growth.
3. Cervical canal has relatively small lumen and it is filled with a plug of alkaline mucus.
4.There are fimbrias in uterus and cervical canal which constantly move downwards
and so they discourage the spread of non-motile organisms further upward.

But this natural protective mechanism breaks during menstruation(periods), after abortion and delivery. During these events cervical canals dilates, fimbrial layer of uterus and cervical canal damages . Vaginal pH increases ( means vagina become more basic) and give favorable environment to germinal growth.

Manipulation like curettage for evacuation in abortion and manual removal of placenta give chance to entry of bacteria.
Intrauterine contraceptive device (inserting Copper T and other devices) may also be a source of infection.

Causes of PID

A- Multiple sex partner and frequent change of sex partner

B- Anemia- Which reduces the immune capacity to fight infections

C- In developing and poor countries most of the deliveries are conducted at home by untrained personals in aseptic environment. Criminal abortions are continue.

Infections Which causes PID

More than 40 type of organisms causes PID but most common infections are Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, both these organisms are transmitted sexually . More than 50% cases are infected by these 2 type of organisms.

What Happen in PID

Bacteria infects the fallopian tubes and cause inflammation. When this happens, normal tissue can become scarred and block the normal passage of an egg(block fallopian tube-either partial or full blockage). Fallopian tubes may damage. You may become infertile (unable to become pregnant). But if your tubes are partially blocked, an egg may implant outside the uterus and cause a dangerous condition called an ectopic pregnancy. In this way the worst outcome of PID could be Infertility in women.

PID has two main complications

1. Infertility (unable to become pregnant)

2. Ectopic Pregnancy( Implantation of Fetus outside the uterus) it may be a dangerous condition.
An ectopic pregnancy can cause internal bleeding leading to death.

Outlook of PID

1. According to US studies --Following a single episode of PID, 8% of women were infertile; after 2 episodes, 19.5% of women were infertile; and after 3 or more episodes, 40% of women were infertile.Tubal damage and scarring can result in infertility. PID is the most common cause of infertility in women.
2. Ectopic pregnancy is 6 times more common in women who have had PID at least once.
3.Chronic pelvic pain is present in up to 18% of women with PID.
4.Ovarian abscesses can occur after an episode of PID.Chronic infection may cause TOA. A TOA(tubo-ovarian mass) is a collection of bacteria, pus, and fluid that occurs in the fallopian tube. It is most often seen in teens. A TOA is also more likely to occur in teens or adult women who use intrauterine devices (IUDs) as birth control.
5.In Developing countries like India Criminal abortions are common. Many deliveries are conducted at home by untrained professionals which causes Pelvic Inflammatory Disease later on. It is estimated that 50 % pf al PID cases of developing countries are caused in this manner.

Symptoms of PID

1.Pain- Lower abdominal pain and Tenderness( pain on touch) which get worse before menstruation.
2. Back Pain
3. Heavy/foul smelling Vaginal Discharge
4.Abnormal Uterine Bleeding( Metrorrhagia)
5.Painful Sexual Intercourse (Dyspareunia)
6.Painful Urination

In Acute Condition

1.Fever

2. Nausea and Vomiting may coexist with PID.

Laboratory Tests

1. Complete Blood count.
2. Complete Urine test
3. Culture for gonorrhea and chlamydia
4. Test for other STD's and HIV.

Imaging

1.Pelvic Ultrasound

2.Laproscopy if indicated.

Treatment of PID

1. Bacterial samples are hard to collect from upper genital tract. So two type of Wide range Antibiotics can be used either orally or intravenously as indicated on intensity of symptoms.
2. Hospitalization may be necessary in severe cases or if PID occur during pregnancy(Although it is very rare).
3. Stop sexual activity until treatment is not completed. Sexual partner should also be treated to stop recurrence.

Complications Of PID

1.Infertility(unable to pregnant)
2.Ectopic pregnancy( Fertilized egg means embryo can implant outside the uterus it may be dangerous.)
3.Chronic PID -if acute infections not treated properly then chronic PID can develop.

Prevention Of PID

Follow few steps to remain healthy:-

1. Wipe from front to back after stool to prevent bacterial entery to vagina.
2.In case of vaginal itching,do not scratch ,just wash with water.
3.Frequent Vaginal douching may push bacteria to inside. So try to escape from frequent use of Vaginal douching.
4. Multiple sex partner is a potential risk of PID. Use barrier devices as latex condoms. Intrauterine Device (copper-T) does not prevent from Sexually transmitted diseases. Limit your sex partners and specially high risk partners.

Homeopathic Treatment

Either in Acute or in Chronic cases of PID homeopathy is equally indicated.

In Acute PID - severe pelvic pains, backaches, fever, vomiting, uterine bleeding can be permanently relieved without leaving any complications. In cases where woman is pregnant along with PID , of course homeopathy provide safe and effective alternative to conventional treatment.

Chronic cases equally treated successfully for pelvic pains and disturbed menstrual cycles. In cases of painful sexual intercourse homeopathy has provides good medication.

Homeopathy has more than 200 medicines for these different group of symptoms. Prescription of medicines vary from case to case on individual symptom group in particular case. Some common medicines for these conditions are-

Platina, Mercuris Sol, Belladona, Pulsatilla, Lachesis, Phosophorus, Sepia, Cantharis, Conium, Arsenic alb, Lycopodium etc. Medicines are prescribed on basis of similarity of patient's symptoms with medicine. Always consult to a Homeopath for correct medication.
